However, the Antofagasta Airport presented a logistical hurdle: the absence of a pushback tractor capable of maneuvering such a massive aircraft on the ramp.
What Is a Tug and Why Was It Critical?
A tug, or pushback tractor, is essential for repositioning large aircraft safely on the ground. For a freighter the size of an Antonov AN-124, a high-capacity tug is non-negotiable. Without it, the aircraft cannot be moved into position for refueling, cargo loading, or departure.
Given that Antofagasta did not have the required equipment, the operation faced a potential halt.
